Ballardsville started a new area on Monday October 1, 2007 when Lt. Ryan Baker & Firefighter Cody Burd started shift as the first two On-Duty Firefighters for the Ballardsville Fire District. The day staff will be on duty Monday - Friday from 8am - 4pm to start, with 2 personnel plus the Chief on staff. Additional personnel and hours are expected in the near future. This was the next step in a plan initiated by Chief Stephen Fante, Asst. Chief Jonathan Barr, & Major Michael Thompson 2 years ago to staff the department with duty personnel during the work-day hours when most volunteers are at their places of employment. It also will help relieve the Volunteer staff of duties such as maintenance, inspections, and administrative requirements that have become overwhelming as the district has grown over the past 10 years. The district is staffing the department with part-time Firefighters at this time to fill in the schedule. Additional full-time persons are hoped to be added later. 5 Volunteer Firefighters from the district were converted to paid along with others through a regular hiring process. The remaining Volunteer staff is ecstatic about this move since they will be able to come to the firehouse on Monday nights for training and do just that…..Training!

2007: The Year in Review

By Major M. Thompson

January 3, 2008

2007 marked a historic year for the Ballardsville Fire District. We responded to 356 calls for service (fifty over 2006) coming close to the benchmark of averaging “one a day” for the year. The increase in runs can be attributed to the population surge continuing in our county as it has in the years past. As this section of the county grows, so do we in calls for service and in daily responsibilities for the operations of the department. We also went on full EMS First Response  in mid-2006 which increased in 2007, and LaGrange and South Oldham Fire Departments Mutual Aid requests were up as well. All of these foreseen events were reasons the Command Staff along with the district Board of Trustees moved to hire a Career Chief and paid staff in the last year. 2008 brings the hopeful addition of another member to the paid crew bringing the total up to 4 personnel, the possible expansion of work hours for the paid staff, and the beginning of the process to build a second station in the district. With all we have accomplished in the past, and the dedication of the Volunteers and Career Staff, there is no limit to what 2008 will bring!
