Oldham County Lost a Hero
September 10, 2020

Oldham County lost a true hero today. I do not use that term lightly. Retired Oldham County EMS Paramedic EJ Mike passed away from complications caused by COVID 19. EJ continued working for the VA and the University of Louisville Hospital after retiring from OCEMS. In addition to being a Paramedic, EJ was a PA. Healthcare is what EJ did best, other than being a devoted father for his two beautiful daughters. EJ was one of the first Paramedics who served Oldham County before OCEMS was formed. He and several other Paramedics formed "Oldham County Paramedics" who responded with Oldham County volunteer fire departments who were operating Basic Life Support ambulance services.
As a Volunteer Firefighter/EMT with South Oldham Fire and Rescue in the 90's, nothing was more comforting to me than seeing EJ pull up on scene, getting out of the car the group used and asking, "what do you need?". He was a true professional in every sense of the word. He was stern when he needed to be and would cut up with everyone once the call had been completed.
COVID 19 is real. Though it may affect some in a very minor way, others have a horrible fight to beat the ailments the virus causes. I ask everyone to please wear a mask and practice social distancing. It's easy to become complacent; we all do from time to time. But all you need is to loose a friend for the reality of the virus to come rushing back.
Rest in peace, EJ Mike.
